I illustrated and designed a map/brochure for the 2020 ISU Horticulture Center Autumnal Festival, one of the Center’s biggest events for the year. The brochure is based around the 2020 theme, “Sounds of the Center”. Because it is an autumnal festival, I approached this through the lens of fall colors and tones.
Process:
One of the biggest challenges with this project was the creation of a cohesive map. The garden changes frequently, with new gardens being added almost yearly, so the map from the previous year was not completely up to date for use. To remedy this, I studied both the current map, the aerial view of the center on Google maps (which isn’t completely updated either) and visited the center itself, where I took pictures of each of the gardens to get a better feel for what they look like and what plants they hold. After this phase, I then went through and illustrated the flora and fauna in each garden based on what I saw during my visit, so that viewers of the map had a clearer vision of where they are at when looking at the map.
I chose a warm and muted color palette to set those autumn tones through the piece, and created a detailed key with information about each garden and the history behind it as further reference for the viewer.
