How Can I Keep From Singing — Expressive Type

Expressive Typography

Brief:

For this project, I explored the technique of visual storytelling through timing and sequencing of typography. I used different fonts, sizing, and color to create typographic patterns and textures. The key in this project was to think about what words sound like and what pause looks like.

CONCEPT:

I chose to create a booklet on the song, How Can I Keep From Singing by Audrey Assad. The music and lyrics have a very smooth quality to them, and the underlying message throughout the song is of keeping hope through trials and looking on the bright side of life. Because of the nature of the song, I chose the colors yellow and blue (plus their varying shades) to represent the light and dark, or good and bad, represented in the song. Yellow signifies light and joy, while blue signifies the dark and ominous (and when in lighter shades, peace and hope). A delicate, flowy typeface was utilized to create a whimsical type cloud for a sense of continuity throughout, and the curving nature of the lyric lines themselves add to the concept of life and how it has its ups and downs. Working all together, these elements combine to visually represent the song in a 16 page booklet of lyrics. Listen to the song while looking through the pages to get the full effect.
