Brief:

For this project, we were tasked with finding a creative use for a mundane object, which we would then turn into a product and package it. Ultimately, the goal was to create an interesting product, name, and an innovative package design. We were to determine our target audience and describe where the product might be seen or offered.

Process:

I love to travel and one of my dream destinations is the Mediterranean Coast. It seems like a magical beautiful place, and I wanted to incorporate this love of the sea into my designs. For this project I researched mundane objects and decided to pursue olive oil.

Olive oil has many health benefits, specifically for skincare, so I decided to create a natural beauty line featuring olive oil as the main ingredient. After more research and brainstorming, I decided on the name Cora. Cora is a Greek name meaning “maiden”, and also has Gaelic roots where it means just, honest, virtuous, and good, all qualities that I wanted my brand to represent, so I chose to use this name.

Concept:

As a clean skincare line, my target audience is 18-35 year old women who care about the environment and what they put on their skin. They shop at Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, Free People, read Kinfolk Magazine, love to travel, love art history and old architecture and everything Greece and Europe, and picnicking with their friends.

Based on this profile, the packaging needed to be high-end, with delicate serif typefaces and unique details. I pulled colors inspired by Santorini, Greece—shades of blue and white, and some corals to represent the sunsets seen from the balconies. The ocean and wind were also something I wanted to bring into the packaging design, so I created a delicate pattern to represent the rolling movements of the waves and the wind. The resulting packaging is feminine, delicate, and classic.
