I created these posters as an independent project for my college Honors Program, where I chose to research and emulate a designer whose work I admire for its typographic brilliance—Paula Scher. Paula is known for her poster designs, specifically for her works created for The Public Theater, so I decided to create posters for four different Broadway shows. I love playing with bold colors and typography, so I was really excited to learn more from studying Paula’s style.
Process:
I researched and studied both Paula’s poster works as well as different Broadway Shows and ultimately decided to create posters for Wicked, The Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, and Anastasia. Each of these have totally different plotlines and styles, so one of the challenges was creating a cohesive look while maintaining the individuality of the posters.
Concept:
Paula’s style is very type-heavy and loud, so for each poster I utilized song lyrics as well as the show titles to make a bold “noise” through type and color. I used images related to each show and manipulated them to match the bold and simplified style of the posters. (ps—the images used are for educational purposes only and all rights belong to the original owners) Color decisions were made based on Paula’s love for International Typographic Style, utilizing muted but bold primary colors (+ green) to further display a similarity to Paula’s style.
