Genuine community is experienced in the gritty, beautiful work of real life; one that invites us to not only “show up”, but stay with. In this issue of Daughters of Promise, content was focused towards encouraging women to invest in the people (family, church, neighbors) directly around them, and insights to building healthy communities. Because it was released in the summer, aesthetic properties of this issue needed to be simple and clean, with golden tones and pops of vibrant summer color: goldenrod, emerald green, deep red, and eggplant.
Process:
For this issue, I was tasked to create a set of “Back to School” cards to accompany an article about the different relationships and overall community that goes with school—parents to teachers, teachers to students, and parents to students. Each group would get a set of four cards (twelve cards total), with short, encouraging messages to motivate and make people smile.
Because of the personal nature that accompanies a hand-written card, I used color and a playful lettering style to convey warmth and cheer. I hand-painted and lettered each of these cards with bright, colorful illustrations and short, quirky sayings. The end result is a conglomeration of bright summery colors and something fun you can hang on your refrigerator when you are done with the card itself.
