Clarity is seeing clearly. It is the lifting of a fog to reveal exactly what we are. Sometimes clarity is scary; it can be unsettling to acknowledge where we are at—especially if where we are at is far from where we wish we were. In this issue of Daughters of Promise Magazine we explored how to seek and embrace clarity in our spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical lives. The issue aesthetic was simple, clear and clean, with lots of white space. Color palette was white, natural wood tones, taupe, and green.
Process:
For this issue, I hand-lettered and illustrated the title page and subtitles for Not Alone, an article series written by 4 different women who share personal stories of seeking help/resources for situations out of their control (mental illness, death of a spouse, etc). Because of the broad range of topics discussed, I leaned a little more towards the abstract and illustrated carnations (red carnations represent charitable love and empathy; the love and sadness we feel when a natural disaster or crisis happens) to represent the women and their stories. On the title page, there is a group of healthy flowers standing tall together, and then one lone flower, by themselves, wilting, to represent those who are struggling. This is to show that we do need each other and we need community to gather around when going through tough times. The title lettering is big and bold to make a statement. You are not alone, whatever you are going through!
