I created a postcard for Illinois Central College’s Graphic Design Portfolio Show, based on the class-chosen theme word of “Journey”. What represents a journey? What kind of journey do designers go on? After deciding on a theme word, I decided to develop a concept based on the creative journey and process. Because the show this invitation was being designed for was not only for graphic designers but also for multimedia students and photography students, I wanted to incorporate multiple art forms and mediums into my design.
Concept:
I’m a big vintage fan and love looking at old typography and color schemes, and decided to style the postcard in the format of an old show announcement, with hand-lettering and sketches showing the “characters” involved (the various art practices and stages of process), and copy informing the viewer that this portfolio show was “coming soon to a college near you”. These elements all work together to create a welcoming invitation, and this concept ended up being the postcard we sent out to invite people to the show.
